Bhangarh Fort is a said to be the most haunted place in India and the people are afraid to go anywhere near the place after sunset. Contradicting its name, Bhangarh fort is not a single fort, but a micro township with several temples, palaces, and minor forts. It was built by Man Singh I, who was one of Navaratnas of Akbar’s court. But now, the place is nothing more than a ghost town with no inhabitants or traces of former societies.

A ghost town

Legend says that the town was cursed by a Sadhu or sage who was adamant that no building in Bhangarh should be taller than his house. There is also another tale about a wizard who fell in love with the princess of Bhangarh. He tricked the princess into using a love potion to allure her but she threw the potion on a boulder which crushed and killed him. The wizard cursed the city before he died which turned Bhangarh into a ghost town.

Deafening silence

Many travelers arrive at Bhangarh fort after listening to the fascinating tales of the curse, and they are welcomed by the dreary echoes of the lost past. But that strange feeling is exactly what they seek in Bhangarh. People used to visit the place when it’s dark night, for that extra thrill of fear, but the government has legally banned anyone from entering the complex after sunset.
